Potosi Sheep Farm
Kathy Davidson was an avid knitter who just wanted a few sheep so she could spin their fleeces into yarn. In 1988, she bought three sheep.
Today, she and husband Bill Groth have more than 70 sheep and lambs
on 53 acres at Potosi Sheep Farm near Glen Rock, York County.
Shetland and Blue-Faced Leicester
breeds roam the verdant pastures
adjacent to Route 83 and their 1920
brick farmhouse.
“I’ve been a knitter all my life. I just love spinning,” Davidson says. “When I’m spinning a fleece and I know which
sheep it’s from, that just makes it
special.”
Potosi Sheep Farm, named for a tiny village that once existed nearby, sells roving, fleeces, sheepskins, yarn,
lambs and meat.
Davidson, a former fi rst-grade teacher, says it’s a round-the-clock business that she finds challenging and fulfilling.
“I just wouldn’t be me anymore without my sheep,’’ Davidson says. “They’re such gentle creatures. I love them.
“People say, ‘When you buy a sheep from Kathy, she comes with it,’” Groth says. “People keep in touch because they know how much she cares.”
