Community Supported Agriculture, or CSA, is an old idea with a modern twist. Its emphasis is to reconnect the
consumer with where food is grown.
CSAs create a personal and financial
relationship between the consumer
and the farmer. In exchange for a fair
price on the farmer’s harvest, the consumer
agrees to the advance purchase
of crop shares. The agreement offsets
the farmer’s risk by ensuring a sale of
goods. It also sets a fair price for the
consumer, who is expected to donate
a modest amount of labor at the
farm, as well.
By ensuring the viability of farming,
CSAs reinforce the concept of stewardship,
a promise to tend the land as
a communal resource and protect it
for future generations.
